Bike ON in the News

8 Aug

Bike ON garnered the attention of many truck drivers, campsite operators, hotel owners and a few media outlets during our trek across the Canadian coast of Lake Superior.

A reporter with OntarioNewsNorth.com caught up with us on our way to Terrace Bay. Read her story, “Travelling Hwy 17 Powered by Pedals and Prayers,” featuring a video interview with Pastor Greg Groves and FMYer Hayden File, online at http://www.karinahunter.com/?p=29739.

Early Arrival!

6 Aug

Parade ride to commence closer to 5:15! :-)

ETA 5:30 PM

6 Aug

We’re almost home! Just left our last gas / potty break in Champaign/Urbana.

We should arrive back in Greenville around 5 p.m. It will take us about 30 minutes to unload the bikes (at an undisclosed location on the outskirts of town :-) ) then all the bikers will parade up Third Street, through the town square, across College Avenue, up Hena passing through the high school lots to 140, and ending at the church.

Family and friends are invited to cheer on the Bike ON riders along the parade route, eventually meeting up with us at the church.

A great trip … a welcome homecoming … a bittersweet final Bike ON, eh? :-)

Parting Scenes From Fife Lake

Log Heaven

6 Aug

We had a well-earned day of fun and relaxation at the Siefken’s log home in Fife Lake, MI. Lots to do as we debriefed about the trip. Such a gift for the Siefken’s to open up their beautiful Michigan home-away-from-home.

Eating Our Way Home

6 Aug

Immediately after crossing the border Greg took us straight to an amazing Italian restaurant. They had salad, breadsticks and a pasta buffet waiting for us. The meal hit the spot.

We went to our hotel in Sault Ste Marie, MI, and, after a good night’s sleep on real beds, we got up and had breakfast.

Our caravan got back on the road toward Fife Lake, MI and the Siefken’s beautiful log cabin, stopping in Gaylord, MI for a filling pizza meal.

After arriving at the cabin we were fed tacos, rice, hot dogs (roasted over the fire), baked apples and s’mores

Before we left this morning we dined on blueberry (and plain :-) ) pancakes and cereal. We expect to stop for lunch in about three hours.

All this to say, we have been systematically eating our way back up Greenville. Hopefully our metabolism will stay in high gear until we arrive, at which point we will all need to cut out carbs and sweets until our bodies stop wanting to eat every hour (since we will no longer have Shari and Kelly sticking Twizzlers in our mouths every 12-15 miles :-) )!

The food has repeatedly been noted as one of the group’s favorite memories of the trip. The downside to all the physical activity was the constant state of famishedness we experienced … the upside was the ability to burn off all the calories we consumed. Now it’s just a matter of getting our stomachs to come down off the mountain along with us.

Lori & Lolly (breakfast and dinner), Dawn & Jo (lunch) & Shari & Kelly (snacks) kept us energized for each days’ challenges.
